HATAS Mission and History

HATAS is a point of entry human services agency that helps the poor, the homeless, and others in need lead independent, self-sufficient, and safe lives in the community. We are a resource for collaborative change.

Serving the New York State Capital District since 1924, HATAS evolved into a professional human services agency in the 1960's, and we have served as the central intake, assessment, and access point for the Albany County emergency shelter system for over 25 years. A focus on emergency services for homeless people, and complimentary programming in mental health, employment, housing, domestic violence, and forensics powers a comprehensive approach that takes advantage of a wide range of agency skills and experience. Last year, HATAS served over 11,000 households in need.  Our emergency service program, which operates 24/7 helped 762 local families and 2,149 single adults find safe emergency shelter. HATAS services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to make sure that everyone who comes to us for help will have a safe place to sleep that night. We collaborate with other area human service providers in order to best serve our clients, and our community as a whole.

Quick Facts

About Homeless and Travelers Aid Society

HATAS is the Albany County gateway to public emergency shelter. Every homeless individual and family seeking public shelter comes through our front door.

New episodes of family homelessness have tripled since 2000.

Last year, we served more than 11,000 households.

No one gets a handout, everyone gets a hand up.

We help more than homeless people. Hundreds of other low-income people and people with disabilities come to us each year for advocacy, counseling, casemanagement, and other assistance.

When people call, we always answer. We have an emergency hotline that operates 24-7, every day of the year.

We can help people in crisis before they lose their homes.
