30 cents per day, or $10 per month, will help prevent local families from becoming homeless. Prevention costs our community four times less than shelter and the social savings are as equally significant. Homeless children when compared to "housed" children are:
- Five times more likely to have stomach problems
- Four times more likely to have breathing problems
- Twice as likely to be depressed and withdrawn
- 36% more likely to repeat a grade
- 25% more likely to witness a violent act
How much does it cost to place a family in emergency shelter?
- 30 days in emergency homeless shelter costs $4,050 ($135/night)
- 30 days in a local emergency motel costs $2,340 on average ($78/night)
- 30 days in the family's own home costs, on average, $1.012.50
- Prevention costs include a rental subsidy and intensive case management. The $1,012.50 cost is calculated using the highest cost projection available.
By joining the Change for Change Campaign however we can save money and keep children in their own home, school, and neighborhood. Homelessness and trauma inducing and we encourage you to help us respond to homelessness through the proactive solution which is prevention and not the reactive solution which is shelter.

Can’t come to Hatas at Home? We can come to your staff meeting, work team gathering or any other location. Our “On the Road” program can be short and sweet or tailored to the time you have available.
